Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy
Policy on the Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies
LONTAR: Jurnal Ilmu Komunikasi permits the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies to support scholarly work, provided that human intellectual contribution, research integrity, transparency, and accountability are maintained. This policy applies to authors, reviewers, and editors.
1. Use of AI by Authors
Authors may use AI tools to support language editing, text organization, literature exploration, coding, and other appropriate research activities. However, AI must not replace authors' critical thinking, scholarly judgment, analysis, or intellectual contribution.
Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and final content of their manuscripts. All AI-assisted content, factual claims, data, quotations, and references must be critically reviewed and verified. Authors must also comply with applicable copyright, intellectual property, research ethics, and data protection requirements.
2. Disclosure of AI Use
Authors must disclose substantive use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in manuscript preparation, specifying the tool used, its purpose, and confirmation that the output was reviewed and verified. AI tools used solely for basic spelling, grammar, or language correction do not require disclosure.
Suggested declaration:
“During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [NAME OF TOOL] for [PURPOSE]. The author(s) reviewed, verified, and edited the generated content and accept full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript.”
3. AI Authorship and Research Methods
AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. Where AI is used as part of the research methodology, rather than merely for manuscript preparation, authors must describe the tool, version, purpose, procedures, and validation process in the Methods section, as applicable, to ensure transparency and reproducibility.
4. AI-Generated Images, Figures, and Data
AI must not be used to fabricate, manipulate, or misrepresent research data, findings, or evidence. AI-assisted visualizations must accurately represent genuine data. Substantive AI use in generating figures, conceptual diagrams, or other visual materials must be disclosed where appropriate. Authors are responsible for the accuracy, originality, and copyright compliance of all submitted materials.
5. Use of AI by Reviewers and Editors
Reviewers and editors must maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and unpublished research. Manuscripts or confidential manuscript content must not be uploaded to public or non-private AI tools.
AI may be used for limited supportive or administrative tasks, provided confidentiality is protected. Peer-review assessments and editorial decisions must remain based on independent human judgment. Reviewers and editors retain full responsibility for the fairness, accuracy, and integrity of their evaluations and decisions.
6. Unacceptable Use of AI
Unacceptable practices include fabricating references, data, quotations, or results; submitting AI-generated analysis as original scholarly reasoning without meaningful human contribution; concealing plagiarism or research misconduct; listing AI as an author; failing to disclose substantive AI use where required; manipulating research findings; and disclosing confidential manuscripts through unauthorized AI tools.
Violations may result in rejection, withdrawal, retraction, or other appropriate actions in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies.
7. Policy Review
LONTAR: Jurnal Ilmu Komunikasi reserves the right to review and update this policy in response to developments in AI technology and scholarly publishing standards. Authors, reviewers, and editors are responsible for complying with the latest version of this policy.
