Corrections and Retractions

Lontar : Jurnal Ilmu Komunikasi is committed to preserving the accuracy, transparency, and integrity of the scholarly record. When errors or concerns are identified in a published article, the journal will assess the matter and take appropriate action based on the nature and significance of the issue.

1. Corrections

A correction may be issued when an error in a published article requires clarification or amendment but does not invalidate the overall findings or conclusions.

Examples may include:

  • Errors in author names, affiliations, or other publication metadata.
  • Typographical or factual errors that affect the clarity or accuracy of the article.
  • Errors in tables, figures, references, or other published content that can be corrected without invalidating the principal findings.
  • Other inaccuracies that require formal correction to maintain the integrity of the published record.

Requests for corrections may be submitted by authors, readers, or other concerned parties through the journal's official contact channels. All requests are subject to editorial assessment.

When a correction is approved, the journal will publish an appropriate correction notice that identifies the affected article, describes the correction, and provides a link to the original publication. The original article and its publication record will be maintained in a transparent manner.

2. Retractions

Retraction may be considered when there is clear evidence that a published article contains serious problems that undermine the reliability or integrity of its findings, conclusions, or publication process.

Grounds for retraction may include, but are not limited to:

  • Fabrication or falsification of research data or findings.
  • Plagiarism or substantial unattributed duplication.
  • Serious errors that invalidate the main findings or conclusions.
  • Unethical research practices or serious violations of research ethics.
  • Compromised peer review or other serious manipulation of the publication process.
  • Other circumstances in which the reliability or integrity of the published work can no longer be supported.

A retraction is intended to correct the scholarly record and alert readers to unreliable research. It is not intended solely as a punishment for authors.

3. Assessment and Decision-Making

All requests or concerns relating to corrections and retractions will be assessed by the editor-in-chief or an authorized editor.

The assessment may involve:

  1. Reviewing the published article and the information supporting the concern.
  2. Requesting explanations or evidence from the authors concerned.
  3. Consulting independent experts or relevant members of the editorial board.
  4. Contacting the authors' affiliated institutions when necessary.
  5. Determining the appropriate editorial action based on the available evidence.

The journal will seek to ensure that decisions are fair, proportionate, and consistent with publication ethics principles.

4. Publication of Notices

When a correction or retraction is issued, the journal will publish a clearly identifiable notice that includes the article title, author(s), publication details, and an explanation of the reason for the action.

Correction and retraction notices will be linked to the original article to ensure transparency and enable readers to understand the status of the publication.

Retracted articles will remain part of the scholarly record where technically and ethically appropriate, with a clear indication of their retracted status. The journal will not silently remove or alter a published article in a way that conceals the correction or retraction.

5. Expressions of Concern

If serious concerns arise but the available evidence is insufficient to reach a final conclusion, the journal may publish an expression of concern.

An expression of concern informs readers that an issue is under assessment. The journal may update the notice when additional information becomes available or when the matter has been resolved.

6. Responsibilities of Authors

Authors are encouraged to notify the editorial office promptly if they identify a significant error or problem in their published work.

Authors must cooperate reasonably with the journal's assessment and provide relevant explanations or supporting documentation when requested.

7. Editorial Independence

Decisions concerning corrections and retractions are based on the reliability and integrity of the scholarly record, the available evidence, and applicable publication ethics principles. Such decisions must not be influenced by commercial interests, institutional pressure, or reputational considerations unrelated to the scholarly merits of the case.
